The Gents teams started their campaigns over the last week or so and everything seems to be going to plan……
Also a sneaky Ladies report right at the end of the reports here……
Gents 1st Team
The Cardross Gents 1st team started the season with their 1st match in Division 3 away to Titwood 2 on Tuesday evening last week.
David Carmichael and Ross Kennedy won a hard fought match 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 with some outstanding ground strokes on display on the evening, particularly from young Ross.
Keith Wilson and Felix Carpenter lost a competitive encounter at 2nd couple, 1-6, 6-3, 1-6. Having made a huge effort to keep their match alive at one set all, they found their opponents too consistent in the final set. There was some swashbuckling stuff on show though with a particular high being Keith’s lap of honour round courts 1&2 to celebrate an audacious drop shot. Hollywood stuff.
Euan McLatchie & Jamie Miller, playing in their 1st season in the 1st team, won 2-1 in an intense battle which saw them fight back from 2-5 in the 3rd set to win a very tight tie-break, with the match scores being 2-6, 6-4 7-6
With an overall result recorded as a 6-3 away win, it was an excellent result for Cardross, having been promoted from Division 4 last year and with no injuries that can’t be fixed by a few pints of Stella or a rub down with a Brillo* pad we are looking good.
*Other soap filled pads are available.
Gents 3rd Team
The newly promoted Cardross Gents 3rd team notched their first 9-0 victory in Div 7 of the new season at home against Bishopton M2
Alan Crossan & Gary Glen made easy work of their pairing with a comfortable 6-2 6-2 6-0
Jonathan Brown & Max McKay worked hard to fight off a spirited pairing to win 6-3, 7-5, 6-2
Steve Dobbin & Raymond Watt found themselves in a dog fight in the first and third sets, eventually coming away 3- 0 winners over a hard hitting pairing 6-4, 6-1, 7-5
The general feeling was that this Bishopton team will take sets from many other clubs and Capt Steve felt the 9-0 scoreline was very harsh on the visitors albeit great news for Cardross.
It was fantastic to bounce back with a strong victory as the first match of the season ended in a home defeat to Virgin Active Hamilton. The team were caught match rusty on the opening match losing 6-3.
The local supporters took it well.
Gents 4th Team
The new Cardross Gents 4th team started their campaign away to Newlands 7.
Gordon Kydd and Iain Brown started very strongly but the Newlands couple soon settled and the Cardross pairing were delighted to win a very competitive match 6-1 4-6 7-5
Graham Court and and Duncan Mckeller, another new pairing had a close match against their opponents and were unfortunate to lose the third set. 6-4 7-5 3-6 but very pleased with their win.
Stephen Diamond and Paul Clancy had a tough match and were simply outclassed by the Newlands pair and lost 6-0 6-2 6-2. Team Captain Graham ‘Centre’ Court was feeling a bit downtrodden starting the season with a 5-4 reversal and the team looks forward to their next match.
Ladies 1st Team
The ladies first team were back in action last week against Woodend 5. An excellent 8-1 to add to their previous victory last week.
Caroline McDaid and Gillian Branch got off to a strong start winning the first set 6-1, the second set was a closer affair with long rallies and numerous deuce games before they came through 6-4 and then finished the third set 6-1, the score belying how competitive a match it actually was.
Karen Muir and Carolyn Turk had their work cut out for them with a long match with some fantastic rallies but came through winning 6-4 4-6 6-2.
Katie Mitchell and Mhairi Stevenson had their first outing as a doubles pairing with great success taking the match 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. Brilliant shot placement by Mhairi and excellent serving and finishing at the net by Katie showed them to be a very strong doubles couple.
Great start again.
