The first match reports are a bit dry. Captains have been too busy giving their troops pep talks and rub downs to feed the copywriter the real inside track but a quick run through of the results will get us kicked off.
The Ladies Teams have been in action with a quick 4 matches to report. All victories for the ‘Dross.
Cardross Ladies 1st team’s first match was away to Virgin Active Hamilton on Mon 24 April. Gillian Branch and Caroline McDaid came through 6-4 in the first set and carried the momentum into the second and third sets with some strong serving by Caroline and good net play by Gillian winning them 6-0 6-2.
Carolyn Turk and Karen Muir played a strong first two sets, with excellent consistent play winning them 6-1 6-3, but were worn down by the blustery conditions in the third set despite bringing it back to a tie break, VA Hamilton took the third set 6-7.
Lorna Brown and Katie Mitchell took some time to settle losing the first set 6-3. Initially struggling with the windy conditions they raced through the next two sets winning 6-0 6-2. The Ladies first team were delighted to start their season in Division 4 with a 7-2 win overall.
Ladies 2 have had 2 games in the first week of matches and we are pleased to report 2 victories.
Cardross Ladies 2nd team took to the courts at Westerton 17th April to kick off their season.
Jill Rooney and Janet Hogg met their match in 1st couple. 3 very long sets saw them playing until just before the lights went out at 10pm. 7-6 7-6 4-6 saw the Cardross pair get a 2-1 sets win.
Mhairi Stevenson and Rona Foster endured long drawn out rallies against very consistent opponents. After a shaky start they managed to win 2nd set but couldn’t quite clinch the 3rd eventually losing 1-2.
Catherine Court and Mia Rooney took on Westertons 3rd couple. After losing out in 1st set they found their rhythm and quickly swept aside their opponents in 2nd and 3rd sets. 4-6 6-2 6-0. A win of 2-1. An overall win of 5-4 to start the 2017 season.
The next outing saw the same players but with new pairings to test out it was going to either be tactical genius in the style of Sir Alex Ferguson or an experimental system which would be forgotten in time….
Jill / Mia combined at first couple to score a strong victory and the other couples of Janet / Mhairi & Rona / Catherine followed suit to record a great 9-0 victory on the night…..
Tactical genius it is.
Another great start for the Ladies teams. Setting the bar very high for the guys again.
Cardross Ladies newly – formed 3rd team started the season with a decisive win against a more experienced Bishopton team on Sunday 23 April. Gwen Irving and Tracy Glen won decisively in the first two sets 6-3, 6-0,but had to fight harder to win 7-5 in the last set when the opposition seemed determined not to lose all three sets. Sara Sullivan, and new member Lisa Fowler made steady work of beating their opponents and won 6-1,6-4,6-2. Elaine Clancy and newcomer Danielle Gordon made sure the team walked off court with a decisive 9-0 win. They had a convincing win : 6-3,6-4,6-2. Given that none of the pairings had played before in league matches, it proved to be a very satisfying outcome.
Hat’s off to all the teams and stay tuned for Men’s match reports soon…..
